From the village of Montecarlo, we pedal downhill to the Pesciaatina, after 5 kilometres we are immersed in the tranquillity of the hills that lie serenely on the slopes of the Pizzorne plateau. After several ups and downs through the vineyards and olive groves of the Strada del Vino e dell’Olio (Wine and Olive Oil Road) and past several small towns including San Pietro in Marcigliano, Valgiano and Matraia, we reach the historic Villa Grabau dating back to 1400. From here, cycling along the Via delle Ville, we take the cycle path that runs along the banks of the Serchio River, which we follow as far as the gates of Lucca. After enjoying the beauty of the walled city, we return by pedalling on the plain to Porcari, where, having left the Via Francigena, the last 4 kilometres of uphill to the Fortress of Montecarlo await us.
