As we depart from Piazza Ospetalieri, a gentle uphill slope welcomes us, leading us to the charming hamlet of Lupori. From there, our ascent continues towards the majestic fortress of Montecarlo, perched atop a hill, offering commanding views of the surrounding plains. After traversing the historic fortified centre of Montecarlo, we journey northward, eventually arriving at the medieval village of Collodi, renowned for its association with the timeless tale of Pinocchio. Continuing our ascent along tranquil roads, we reach the village of San Gennaro, surrounded by verdant hillsides adorned with vineyards and olive groves. Here, at one of the region’s most captivating viewpoints, we are treated to a panoramic spectacle—a breathtaking 180° vista encompassing Mount Pisano to the left, the city of Lucca at the centre stage, and the majestic Apuan Alps to the right. Our journey culminates at the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Belvedere, a 17th-century marvel nestled in a panoramic position north of the hamlet of Gragnano. To conclude our adventure, we embark on a leisurely 15-kilometre descent and flat stretch back to Altopascio, allowing us to savour the memories of our scenic exploration amidst the tranquil landscapes.
Embarking from Piazza Garibaldi, this captivating journey unfolds as we venture towards Badia Pozzeveri, a quaint hamlet nestled along the historic Via Francigena. This ancient route traces its origins to the Camaldolese Abbey of San Pietro, a revered institution that has graced this region for centuries. After traversing 20 kilometres of scenic plains, we arrive at the foothills of Mount Pisano, where the charming village of Sant’Andrea di Compito awaits. Especially enchanting in early spring, this locale promises a captivating display of camellia plants, abundant in this picturesque corner of Lucca. Pedalling along tranquil secondary roads with minimal traffic, we bid farewell to the Compito area, journeying back towards the heart of Altopascio. En route, we pass through Orentano, completing our memorable excursion through the serene landscapes of the region.
